Leon Chua began his academic career at Purdue University before joining the University of California, Berkeley in 1971, where he has been a professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences department. His research interests include cellular neural networks, nonlinear circuits and systems, nonlinear dynamics, bifurcation theory, and chaos theory.
In 1971, Chua postulated the existence of the memristor, a fundamental passive circuit element linking electric charge and magnetic flux. This theoretical component was physically realized in 2008 by researchers at Hewlett-Packard.
Chua’s work has earned him numerous accolades, including the IEEE Neural Networks Pioneer Award in 2000 and the IEEE Gustav Robert Kirchhoff Award in 2005. He has also received multiple honorary doctorates from institutions worldwide.
